Too often students’ curiosity is dampened when science education is seen as reading a chapter in a textbook and answering the questions at the end. These units use standards as the focal point but open the door to exploration, student engagement, and thinking scientifically because Science as a discipline is about questioning, investigating, solving problems and discovering how the world and the things in it work.
According to Charlotte Danielson, learning experiences need to be rigorous, yet not overwhelming; learning needs to fill the gap between boredom and frustration. These units do just that.

- Each unit in the book includes (a) an overview of the unit, (b) four hands-on inquiry lessons, written in a step-by-step fashion for the teacher, (c) a choice summative menu with a rubric for students to self-grade and for teachers to use in the final grading of the unit, (d) an extension menu, and (e) a scaffold and support document as well as notes for older and/or younger students giving teachers all of the information they need to adjust the units to their students’ needs, as well as their school, district, and state requirements.

This product has lots of positive aspects! The format is easily understood in the first few pages of the guide. There are rubrics after each lesson, making it easy for teachers and students to assess work. The unit is Common Core Aligned 3rd-5th, aligned to the NSES and NGSS standards for science. There are tic tac toe style summative assessment based on Multiple Intelligences, along with a rubric. Each unit also contains an extension menu for added differentiation. There are both teacher led and student led science activities in this guide. The research component for this unit is strong, many resources are laid out in the teacher pages of websites to use. Since simulation is difficult for earth and space science this would be a great addition to any science units on the subject.
