Do you have a student who LOVES to talk about a topic, often meant to initiate an off-subject discussion or debate? One who seems to know just about everything about a subject? One who is overflowing with knowledge – or trivia? One who isn’t too interested in writing?

A “Daily Writing Prompts” Learning Center will motivate and engage your students, meet language arts standards, and give practice in grammar, punctuation, and spelling! Get students’ ideas out of their heads and down on paper.

For a “Daily Writing Prompts Learning Center,” laminate each page/prompt so that prompts are back to back in one topic area. That will give students a front and back choice of writing prompts. Have students choose a prompt in a content/interest area and write for a short time for the first writing attempt. Have students share their responses with a partner, small group, or the whole class. Listeners/readers can take notes to evaluate the writing using criteria from the detailed writing rubric provided. Then have students respond to another prompt in the same topic area using a provided criteria card and/or criteria in the rubric. Again, let them share their response with a partner, small group, or the whole class.

Students can compare the quality of their writing before and after they use the criteria card and/or rubric. They will find by using criteria they learn to better communicate their ideas AND creativity, will meet any of the above needs, and design a product they will be proud of!
