Assessment is the evaluation of the student’s knowledge before the learning activity (pre-assessment), during the learning process (formative assessment), and at the end of the learning experience (summative assessment.) With pre-assessment information the teacher is able to differentiate curriculum for students at their readiness levels; with formative assessments teachers ascertain who needs re-teaching and who is able to move forward; with summative assessment the teacher identifies who has assimilated the learning and is ready to advance. With formative and summative assessment, students need to be aware of the product or performance being evaluated and the criteria associated with the final product or performance.
