Postcards from White
uses the imagination of E.B. White and his stories of adventure to allow
students to go on their own adventure of creative thinking. This book uses
thinking skills to challenge high ability learners and also allows for
differentiation so that all students in a class may participate. The activities
include Bloom’s Taxonomy of Cognitive Development, Williams’ Taxonomy of
Creative Thought, SCAMPER, Creative Problem Solving, and Synectics.
Each week, E.B. White “communicates” with the
class through postcards. Each postcard gives information about the particular
story the students read. Students engage in creative thought as they read the
stories and complete activities.
Each story uses an original teaching
strategy to present the activities to the students. For example, students take a
piece of a web when deciding on an activity for Charlotte’s Web. For
Stuart Little, students choose an adventure card to determine which
adventure they will go on. Finally, for The Trumpet of the Swan, students
pick music notes to discover which activities they will complete.
