Hoaxes have been a part of American history since the beginning of the nation. Among the most well-known hoaxters were Benjamin Franklin and Edgar Allen Poe. These and other men of letters enjoyed playing a good joke on a gullible public through newspaper and magazine articles and in books.
Each of these 11 plays is based on an actual incident in American History. Before performing the plays, students are asked to research specific information related to the time, place or persons involved. There are four to eight research tasks in each play.
Additional reading sources help students find more about American history and discover the truth behind the claims. The student who does the research reads his or her results at the appropriate point in the play.
