What's Important? The Kids' Guide to Character and Ethics
by Jeri Cipriano
Help students identify their own codes of behavior!
Help students embark on a personal journey of values and ethics - learning to
do the "right" thing. The 35+ activities won't tell young people what to
believe or how to behave. Instead, they will help students identify
their own codes of behavior, or ethics, for the present and the future.
Students "take stock" of who they are, determine how they'd handle a variety of situations, and compare their opinions, decisions, and actions with their peers. As they become more sure of themselves, they will find it easier to negotiate the challenges they face and to live comfortably with themselves and others.
A significant feature of What's Important? is its adaptability for use
at school or home, individually or in group settings. Another special feature
is the "Kids Speak Up" pages that appear throughout, providing quotes from
young people about topics such as peer pressure, courage, parenting, tolerance,
and self-discipline.
The journal, or writing component, provides constant opportunities for
students to record their impressions and reactions to the material presented in
each section. With these ongoing journaling opportunities, the activities lend
themselves to group discussion while remaining true to the commitment as a personal
exploration of values and ethics.
A complete contemporary bibliography of "Good Reads" gives students stories
that reinforce positive character traits.
