by Liz Bass
In addition to practicing writing for the state writing assessment tests, this book is a tonic for
reluctant writers and, at the same time, a rejuvenation for the enthusiastic and gifted student.
Students are asked to locate Tierra del Fuego and Kosovo; and to describe someone
whose name is "Rainey Knight." Students are called upon to write a story based on nine words;
to identify not only percussion instruments but Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Appleseed, and Bill
Gates as well. Opinion pieces are requested about topics such as "Why is forgiveness so difficult
for most people?" and "How is road rage related to respect?"
Writing: one day at a time is sequentially designed beginning with "graduated" exercises - using
words in sentences as both nouns and verbs; writing sentences using words in position; defining
terms and using them in later exercises; making lists, explaining mottos; writing descriptions,
narratives, and expository paragraphs. There are spelling exercises, grammar nudges, and
vocabulary-building assignments. There are opportunities to write stories, poems, essays,
thank-you letters, paragraphs, and sentences.
